Hawaii

Hawaii joined the Union on 21 August 1959, becoming the 50th state. In the 1960 election, the state had four electoral votes. It has maintained four electoral votes since then.

Hawaii is a Democratic stronghold, and the party has won the state in every presidential election except in 1972 and 1984. Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan won the state in the 1972 and 1984 elections, respectively.

Between 1960 and 2020, Hawaii voted for the winning presidential candidate in every election except 1960, 1968, and 2000. It supported the winner in the 1964, 1976, 1980, 1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2008, 2012, and 2020 elections. This includes Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential election.

In the 16 US elections Hawaii has participated in since its statehood, it has voted for Democratic candidates 14 times and Republican candidates twice.
