Louisiana became a state on 30 April 1812, after land acquired through the Louisiana Purchase was organised into the state. Like many Southern states, Louisiana seceded from the Union during the Civil War and did not participate in the 1864 presidential election.
Louisiana was a Democratic stronghold from the Reconstruction Era through the mid-20th century but has since shifted to a predominantly Republican alignment. It has voted for Democratic candidates such as Jimmy Carter in 1976 and Bill Clinton in 1992 and 1996. In the 2020 presidential election, Louisiana voted for Republican Donald Trump over Joe Biden.
Following Hurricane Katrina and subsequent population shifts, Louisiana lost one electoral vote after the 2010 Census and now has eight electoral votes—the same as Kentucky and Oregon.
