Maryland

Maryland, one of the 13 original British colonies, was first inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Algonquian-speaking peoples, the Iroquoians, and the Siouans. It was founded by George Calvert, 1st Baron Baltimore, in the 17th century. The land was named after Queen Henrietta Maria by King Charles I in 1632. Maryland joined the Union in April 1788 and has participated in all US presidential elections.

Maryland has been a stronghold for the Democratic Party, and since 1960, it has only voted for Republican candidates three times: Richard Nixon in 1972, Ronald Reagan in 1984, and George H.W. Bush in 1988. In 2020, Joe Biden won the state of Maryland by defeating then-President Donald Trump. Maryland has 10 electoral votes in the Electoral College.
