Missouri

Missouri became a state of the US in August 1821. From 1904 to 2004, the state tended to award its electoral votes to the winner of the White House, except in 1956, when it voted for Adlai Stevenson over Dwight Eisenhower.

The streak ended in 2008 when Barack Obama won the electoral votes of Missouri over John McCain. Obama received 49.3% of the votes, and McCain received 49.4%. McCain won by about 3,900 votes.

Obama went on to lose Missouri again in 2012 when he was running for his second term in office, losing by a margin of 9.5% to Mitt Romney. Trump won the state in 2016 and 2020, with the latter election seeing him defeat Joe Biden by over 15%.

2020 marked the sixth consecutive Missouri win for Republican candidates, indicating that the state has become a reliable stronghold for the Republican Party.

Like other Midwestern states, Missouri has experienced slower population growth according to recent US censuses, resulting in a reduction of electoral votes from 18 before the Great Depression to 10.
