Montana

Montana is a landlocked state in the US. The state first came under American rule with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 from France, and the land was later explored by the Lewis and Clark Expedition shortly after the purchase.

Montana received statehood in November 1889. Six days prior, North Dakota and South Dakota had been admitted as states, and Washington became a state just three days before Montana.

Montana has leaned Republican in recent US presidential elections, voting for Democratic candidates only twice since 1952. Prior to 1952, the state had supported the Democratic Party in five consecutive elections, voting for Franklin D Roosevelt four times and Harry S Truman once.

In the most recent election of 2020, Donald Trump of the Republican Party defeated Joe Biden of the Democratic Party by over 16 points.

Montana lost its second congressional district after the 1990 Census but did not regain it in 2020. The state has had a total of three electoral votes since the 1990 Census and will continue to have three electoral votes in the 2024 and 2028 elections.
