New Hampshire is situated in New England, on the northeastern side of the United States. The state is among the 13 original colonies and joined the Union in June 1788 as the ninth state. It has participated in all 59 presidential elections.
The voters of the Granite State are known for choosing different parties, making it a key battleground in elections. Although it often votes for Democratic candidates, New Hampshire supported Joe Biden over Donald Trump in the 2020 presidential election. This continued its trend as a swing state, frequently shifting support between the two major parties.
New Hampshire plays an important role in electing the president. The number of electoral votes can change based on shifts in population as recorded by each decade’s census. Prior to 2000, New Hampshire’s number of electoral votes fluctuated in response to changes in its population, reflecting adjustments in its representation in the Electoral College. It now has 4 electoral votes.
