Oklahoma, often called “The Sooner State” due to the early settlers who staked their claims in the land, joined the Union on November 16, 1907. This nickname reflects the spirit of those who were among the first to settle the region.
Initially, Oklahoma voted for the Democratic Party in all elections except two until 1948. The state turned blue again in 1964 for Lyndon Johnson but has since been a strong supporter of the Republican Party.
In its first presidential election in 1908, Oklahoma had seven electoral votes, which was the most for any state outside the original 13 colonies. Maine had more electoral votes when it participated in its first election.
As of the 2024 presidential election, Oklahoma will continue to have seven Electoral College votes.
In the 2020 election, Republican Donald Trump won the state of Oklahoma by 65% to Joe Biden’s 32%, marking the sixth consecutive election in which Republicans won by over 25% of the vote.
