Oregon

Oregon became a US state in February 1859 after splitting from the Oregon Territory. From its founding until 1984, the state predominantly voted for Republicans, except in 1868, 1912, and 1964. During the Great Depression (1929-1939) and the Second World War (1939-1945), when Franklin Roosevelt won four elections, Oregon supported the Democratic Party.

Oregon turned blue for Democratic candidates in 1988 and has remained so since. In the 2020 election, the state voted for Joe Biden over Donald Trump, with Biden winning by a margin of 16%.

The state has experienced population growth, adding at least one electoral vote every few decades through the census. The most recent population increase was in 1990, and for the 2024 election, Oregon will have eight electoral votes.

Oregon now has a population of over 4.2 million people and is the ninth-largest and 27th-most populous US state.
