Rhode Island

Rhode Island was the first British colony to call for a Continental Congress in 1774 and the first to end its allegiance to the British Empire in 1776.

Rhode Island ratified the Constitution and joined the Union in 1790, becoming the last of the 13 original colonies to do so.

Since 1928, Rhode Island has been a stronghold for the Democratic Party, voting for Republican candidates only four times: twice for Dwight Eisenhower in 1952 and 1956, once for Richard Nixon in 1972, and once for Ronald Reagan in 1984. The state voted for Joe Biden in 2020, with Biden defeating Donald Trump by a margin of 20%. Rhode Island is considered a safe Democratic state.

Rhode Island has had four electoral votes since its first election in 1792, although it had five electoral votes during the 1910s and 1920s. It will have four electoral votes in the 2024 presidential election.
