South Dakota, a landlocked state in the North Central region of the US, became a state in November 1889. The same month, North Dakota, Montana, and Washington also joined the Union.
South Dakota has been a strong supporter of the Republican Party in presidential elections, voting for Democrats only in five instances. The last instance was in 1964 when Lyndon Johnson won the state over Barry Goldwater.
Although several Democrats have represented South Dakota in both chambers of Congress, the state has predominantly supported Republican candidates in presidential elections. In the 2020 election, Donald Trump won South Dakota by a margin of approximately 26 percentage points over Joe Biden.
South Dakota has consistently had three electoral votes since its statehood.
