Tennessee

In 1796, Tennessee joined the Union, becoming the 16th state. During the Civil War, Tennessee was in rebellion and did not participate in the 1864 election.

From the Reconstruction Era—a period after the Civil War during which America addressed issues arising from the abolition of slavery—until the late 20th century, Tennessee predominantly voted for Democratic candidates.

However, starting in the 1950s, Republicans began to dominate the state, winning most elections. The most recent Democratic victories were in 1992 and 1996, with Al Gore as Bill Clinton's vice-presidential running mate. Gore, who later ran for president in 2000, lost Tennessee in that election.

In 2020, Donald Trump won the state, defeating Joe Biden by a margin of 23%. Tennessee is a safe Republican state and has 11 electoral votes.
