Vermont was the first state to join the Union after the original 13 colonies, becoming a state in March 1791. It has participated in all presidential elections since 1792.
While Vermont was a stronghold of the Republican Party from the party's founding in 1854 until 1988, it has been a reliable Democratic state in more recent years. During that period, Vermont voted for Democratic candidates only once, in 1964, when it supported Lyndon Johnson over Republican Barry Goldwater.
The state shifted its support in 1992, breaking its Republican pattern by voting for Bill Clinton over George H. W. Bush. Since then, Vermont has consistently voted for Democratic candidates.
In the 2020 presidential election, Joe Biden won Vermont with 66% of the vote, defeating Donald Trump, who received 31%. Biden secured the state’s three electoral votes.
