Washington became a state of the US in November 1889. The state has experienced periods of support for both Democrats and Republicans.

However, the Democrats have won Washington in nine consecutive presidential elections, including the 2020 election where Democrat Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump. Biden received 58% of the vote, while Trump received 39%.

In the Western US, only California and Texas have more electoral votes than Washington, which has 12 Electoral College votes. The state's population has increased in recent Censuses.
